Homeowners Insurance Claims: Homeowners Suffer From Underpaid Insurance Claims

Over the years many homeowners have suffered when their insurance company has underpaid their homeowner’s insurance claims. Underpaying homeowner’s insurance claims has permitted insurance companies to acquire and build huge profits. This has been done all at the expense of the people who have done the right thing by paying their homeowner’s insurance, year after year.

Using the law of large numbers, imagine the insurance companies neglecting and skimming just small amounts of repairs on a large volume of claims. Just $100 off of one-million claims in a year is 100-million dollars. As you can see it can add up rather quickly. Unfortunately, homeowners with much larger claims like house fires, tornadoes, and hurricanes will often be shorted tens-of-thousands, and in many cases even hundreds-of-thousands of dollars on just one claim.

I’m not saying that all insurance companies, all adjusters, and all claims are handled this way. However, inexperienced adjusters, inexperienced contractors, and yes, inexperienced homeowners can and often make mistakes on insurance claims handling. The heartache is that such issues cause homeowners like you to suffer immensely when you believe that you were NOT in “good hands,” when you were NOT treated “like a good neighbor,” and when you found out there was NO ONE “on your side.”

Again, not all insurance companies, nor their adjusters, will always purposely act inappropriatley toward their policyholders. However, in many, many cases they simply are. Many insurance companies will use various tactics to try to under pay claims to homeowners. Some of these may include; excluding payment of contractor’s overhead and profit, use outdated or proprietary price lists with low replacement and repair costs, calculating unreasonable and excessive depreciation of items damaged in the claim – with absolutely no consideration for the age and useful life of the items, and failure to properly price specialty items.

Even when the insurance companies have to settle the insurance claim in full, the delay in payments gives them the benefit of holding those funds for a longer period of time. Your money is earning the insurance company interest and you’re struggling to work it all out. Is this what you signed up for? Insurance companies will count on you being so happy that you finally received any amount of money that you will settle for their low-balled payment.

In some cases, if your insurance company is found to have unreasonably underpaid your insurance claim it’s possible that you may be awarded “Bad Faith,” damages in addition to the damages to your property. The underpayment and delay of insurance settlement proceeds that are a result of a covered claim to an insure property has severe implications.
