Rep. McCarthy was a co-sponsor of this legislation which passed in the House in early March, and overwhelmingly passed in the Senate shortly after.
“As a Long Islander, I understand the frustration my neighbors are experiencing regarding flood insurance rate increases, especially in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. With the rising cost of other expenses, the financial burden of mandatory flood insurance has created an additional strain on many Long Island homeowners,” said the Congresswoman. “Reducing the financial burden and ensuring that the cost of flood insurance will not force anyone from their home, or reduce their ability to sell their home is a good start to bringing relief to those who have been burdened by FEMA’s flood insurance program. I am pleased to see that my constituents will benefit from this legislation in the near future.”

This is a tough one. I hear the issue, the reasoning, and the cost, however, these property owners paid the insurance and the NFIP offered to cover the building. What if you had two house fires and no insurance company offered you insurance and everyone said, “You’re on your own”? People would blow a gasket. In addition, the mortgage company forces these properties to have flood insurance and wind insurance. If you don’t obtain any, they force place your insurance for you at three times the cost.

I just wanted to drop you a line and say how grateful we are that we found you online.
